When something feels wrong with your urine, your kidneys, or your prostate, you want answers quickly. You want a doctor who has seen your problem many times, explains it in plain words, and tells you clearly what comes next.

Dr. I. R. Ravish is a urologist in Bengaluru with over 28 years of experience. He sees patients at Nephro Uro Clinic in Jayanagar and at Sagar Hospitals in Tilaknagar. His work covers kidney stones, prostate problems, urinary tract conditions, male infertility, and urology care for children.

This page explains what a urologist does, when to see one, the conditions Dr. Ravish treats, and what to expect at your first visit.

What Does a Urologist Do?

A urologist is a doctor who treats problems of the urinary system. This includes:

  • The kidneys, which filter your blood and make urine
  • The ureters, the tubes that carry urine from the kidneys to the bladder
  • The bladder, which stores urine
  • The urethra, the tube that carries urine out of the body

In men, a urologist also treats the prostate and the male reproductive organs.

Urology is both a medical and a surgical specialty. A urologist can treat you with medicines, and can also perform procedures, from small keyhole operations to complex repair surgery.

When Should You See a Urologist?

Many people wait because they are not sure their symptoms are serious. A simple rule: if something feels wrong when you pass urine, you have pain in your side or lower belly, or a test has shown something unusual in your urine or blood, it is worth booking a visit.

  • Pain or burning when you pass urine. This can point to a urinary infection, a kidney stone moving down the ureter, or inflammation of the bladder. Each needs different treatment, so finding the cause matters.
  • Blood in your urine. Always get this checked, even if it happens only once and even if it does not hurt. It can come from a stone or an infection, and sometimes from a growth in the bladder or kidney.
  • Passing urine too often. Frequent urges that do not settle may be caused by an overactive bladder, a urinary infection, an enlarged prostate, or diabetes.
  • Kidney stone pain. A stone usually causes sudden, sharp pain in the back or side, below the ribs. The pain often spreads toward the groin, comes in waves, and may bring nausea. You will likely need a scan.
  • Stone pain with fever or chills is an emergency. It can mean an infected, blocked kidney. Go to a hospital straight away.
  • A child with urinary problems. Conditions like undescended testes, hypospadias (where the urine opening is in the wrong place), vesicoureteral reflux (urine flowing back toward the kidneys), and hydronephrosis (a swollen kidney from blocked urine) need a doctor trained in children’s urology.
  • Prostate symptoms in men. An enlarged prostate is very common as men age. Signs include a weak stream, trouble starting, and feeling that your bladder has not fully emptied. Men with prostate symptoms, or those worried about their risk of prostate cancer, can talk to a doctor about whether PSA testing or other checks are right for them.
  • Fertility or sexual health concerns. Varicocele (swollen veins in the scrotum), trouble getting a partner pregnant, and erection problems can all be assessed by a urologist.

Conditions Dr. Ravish Treats

Kidney Stones

Kidney stones are one of the most common urology problems in India. Treatment depends on the size and position of the stone. Some small stones may pass naturally with the right fluids, pain relief, and medical monitoring, depending on their size and position. Larger stones may need laser treatment through a thin scope, or keyhole surgery through the back.

Prostate Conditions

Dr. Ravish treats benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), where the prostate grows larger with age, using both medicines and surgery. He is known for Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (HoLEP), a laser procedure that removes the blocking part of the prostate from the inside, with no cuts on the skin. He also performs TURP (transurethral resection of the prostate).

Pediatric Urology

He treats the full range of children’s urology problems, including undescended testes, hypospadias repair, pyeloplasty for a blocked kidney, bladder problems present from birth, and urinary infections in children that keep coming back.

Reconstructive Urology

The urinary tract can be damaged by injury, past surgery, infection, or a condition present from birth. Reconstructive surgery repairs narrowing (strictures) of the urethra or ureter and restores normal urine flow.

Male Infertility

Dr. Ravish assesses and treats male infertility. This includes surgery for varicocele (varicocelectomy) and sperm retrieval procedures for men who have no sperm in their semen.

Urinary Tract Infections

Mild infections are often treated by a family doctor. Repeated infections, infections in children, and kidney infections need a specialist to find and treat the cause.

Bladder Conditions

He treats overactive bladder, urinary incontinence, bladder stones, and bladder growths. Depending on your symptoms and first test results, a cystoscopy, which is a camera look inside the bladder, may be advised.

Kidney Transplant and Urological Cancers

Dr. Ravish is also experienced in kidney transplant surgery and in the surgical care of cancers of the kidney, bladder, and prostate. Early evaluation can help identify suspected urological cancers and guide the right treatment.

What to Expect at Your First Visit

  • A detailed conversation. Dr. Ravish will ask about your symptoms, when they started, what makes them better or worse, and your past health. This is the most important step toward the right diagnosis.
  • A physical examination, if needed. For stone pain, this may mean checking your belly and side. For prostate problems, a rectal examination may be advised. For children, the exam is gentle and adapted to keep the child comfortable.
  • Tests. You may be asked for a urine sample and blood tests. An ultrasound or CT scan gives a clear picture of your kidneys and bladder. For bladder problems, a cystoscopy may be advised.
  • A clear plan. Dr. Ravish will explain what he found in simple words, go through your treatment options, and tell you what to expect during recovery and follow up. Parents of young patients get the same clear explanation.
  • What to bring: Your past reports, scans, a list of the medicines you take, and any discharge summaries from earlier treatment.

Treatment Options

  • Medicines and monitoring. Many problems, such as small stones, early prostate enlargement, and urinary infections, respond well to medicines and simple changes. When watching and waiting is the right choice, Dr. Ravish will say so.
  • Laser treatment for stones (ureteroscopy and laser lithotripsy). A thin scope is passed through the urine passage to reach the stone, with no cuts on the skin. A laser breaks the stone into small pieces, which are removed or passed later. A small temporary tube called a stent is often placed to help urine drain. How long you stay in hospital depends on the stone and your health, and Dr. Ravish will explain this before the procedure.
  • Percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL). For large kidney stones, a small keyhole cut in the back gives direct access to the kidney. It is done in hospital under anesthesia.
  • Shock wave lithotripsy. Sound waves from outside the body break the stone into smaller pieces, with no cuts. It suits some stones of certain sizes and positions.
  • HoLEP and TURP. Surgery through the urine passage to relieve blockage from an enlarged prostate.
  • Laparoscopic and endoscopic surgery. Keyhole and scope based surgery for kidney, prostate, and repair procedures. Compared with some open operations, these may involve smaller cuts, less discomfort after surgery, and a shorter recovery, depending on the procedure.
  • Pediatric procedures. Pyeloplasty, orchiopexy (bringing down an undescended testis), hypospadias repair, and bladder reconstruction, using techniques suited to a child’s body.
  • Reconstructive procedures. Urethroplasty for urethral stricture and ureteric reimplantation for reflux, planned carefully before surgery.
